VTU allows a student to move up a year while carrying backlog subjects, provided a minimum share of the credits offered so far has been earned. VTU requires 35% minimum in university end-semester exams (SEE) and 40% aggregate in theory subjects.

Grace Marks Policy
VTU permits awarding up to 5 grace marks in theory papers for passing or securing first class.
ATKT & Carry-Over Progression Guidelines
- Under CBCS rules, students can progress to 3rd semester carrying a maximum of 4 failed heads from 1st year.
- Progression to 5th semester requires clearing all 1st year subjects completely.

2021 Scheme uses Percentage = CGPA x 10. The 2015/2017/2018 schemes use Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10.

VTU credit based promotion
Eligible when Earned Credits >= Required share of Offered Credits- Promotion from the second year to the third year needs the larger share of the first two years of credits.
- Backlog subjects remain registered until cleared and must be completed before the degree is awarded.
- Credit requirements are stated in the VTU academic regulation for your scheme, so confirm the exact share for your batch.
Frequently asked questions
Do backlog subjects stop me attending the next semester?
Not by themselves. Provided you meet the credit share for promotion you attend the next year normally and clear the backlog subjects alongside through supplementary examinations.
What counts as an earned credit?
A subject credit is earned only when the subject is passed. Appearing for the examination without clearing it earns nothing.
Does a cleared backlog restore my credits?
Yes. Once the supplementary result is declared the credits are added to your earned total and the eligibility position improves immediately.
Is the requirement the same for every programme?
The credit structure differs between programmes and schemes, so enter the offered credits from your own scheme rather than a generic figure.
What if I clear a backlog after checking?
Add the cleared credits to your earned total and run the check again. Promotion eligibility is recalculated on every declared result.
Does attendance affect promotion too?
Yes. Credit eligibility is one condition and the attendance requirement of the college is another, and both have to be met.
