A failed paper sits in your CGPA at a zero grade point until it is cleared, which pulls the average further down than most students expect. This calculator compares the CGPA carrying the backlog with the CGPA after the paper is cleared at the grade point you expect, so you can see the exact recovery before deciding on a re-examination.

CGPA with and without a backlog

CGPA after clearing = (Current CGPA x Total credits + Expected grade point x Backlog credits) / Total credits

A failed paper counts as zero grade points while its credits still sit in the denominator.
Many universities cap the grade awarded on a re-examination, so plan with a conservative grade point.
Honours and distinction awards are usually withdrawn once a paper has been carried over.

Frequently asked questions

Do backlog credits count while the paper is unclear?

Yes. The credits stay in the total but earn zero grade points, which is why one failed paper can pull the CGPA down by several tenths.

Will clearing a backlog restore the original CGPA?

Only partly. The re-examination grade is often capped near the pass grade, so the recovered CGPA sits below what a first attempt pass would have produced.

Does a backlog affect eligibility for distinction?

In most ordinances, including AKTU and SPPU, a carried over paper removes eligibility for honours or distinction even after it is cleared.

Why does one failed paper cost so much?

Its credits stay in the denominator while contributing zero grade points, so a four credit failure in a twenty four credit semester alone can cost more than a grade level.

Is the recovery the same at every university?

The arithmetic is the same on any ten point credit scheme. What differs is the grade cap each university applies to a re-examination result.
