About this tool

Anna University classification depends on more than the CGPA. First Class with Distinction requires a CGPA of 8.50 with every subject cleared in the first appearance and the programme finished within its normal duration. This evaluator applies all three conditions together, so you can see whether an arrear anywhere in the programme has moved you from Distinction down to First Class.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cleared arrear still block Distinction?

Yes. Distinction requires that every subject was passed at the first appearance, so clearing an arrear later restores the credits but not the Distinction eligibility.

Does an extra semester affect the class?

Exceeding the normal programme duration removes Distinction eligibility even when the CGPA is high enough.

Where is the classification printed?

It appears on the consolidated statement of grades and the provisional certificate issued by the Controller of Examinations.

Is Second Class a pass?

Yes. A CGPA of 5.00 with all subjects cleared satisfies the degree requirement and is classified as Second Class.

Does a subject withdrawal count as a failed attempt?

An approved withdrawal is treated differently from an arrear, but it can extend your duration, which affects Distinction. Confirm the entry on your statement before answering.

Can the classification change later?

It is fixed once the final consolidated statement is issued, so it reflects your position at the point of degree award.
